SYDNEY, NSW – Thursday 2 July 2026
CleanPeak Energy has partnered with Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) to deliver 100% renewable electricity to Australia’s newest airport.
CleanPeak Energy will invest over $50m at the site to develop 9 MWp of new rooftop solar and a 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Combined with WSI’s existing 4.5 MWp rooftop solar system, CleanPeak will supply more than 18 GWh of on-site renewable electricity annually to power the airport under a seven-year Electricity Supply Agreement (ESA).
In addition, CleanPeak Energy will manage the airport’s embedded network distribution system ensuring all tenants and operators at the site receive a seamless and reliable renewable electricity offering for years to come.
WSI’s electricity requirements are expected to grow from around 40 GWhs annually today, to about 120 GWhs within the next 4-5 years. CleanPeak Energy will supply 100% of WSI’s electricity requirements from day one through a combination of onsite solar generation and storage, together with additional supply from CleanPeak’s growing fleet of solar farms.
Designed from the ground up as a greenfield development, Western Sydney International Airport has been built with sustainability at its core. Everything from baggage handling systems and terminal operations through to electric airside equipment, including pushback tractors, will be powered by renewable electricity.
CleanPeak Energy CEO Philip Graham said, “the project demonstrates how critical infrastructure can transition to renewable energy without compromising reliability or performance”.
“This project is about unlocking what’s possible when large-scale energy infrastructure is designed, financed and operated as an integrated energy system to power critical assets like airports without compromising performance,” said Mr Graham.
“CleanPeak is enabling the airport to run on 100% renewable electricity by investing at the site to optimise local energy infrastructure as well as developing additional solar farms to deliver the scale of energy required to ensure the airport runs 24/7 with renewable electricity.”
CleanPeak commenced supplying renewable electricity to the airport on 1 May 2026.
When complete, the fully-integrated energy system operated by CleanPeak will incorporate:
- the existing 4.5 MWp rooftop solar installation at the airport that will be leased, operated and maintained by CleanPeak;
- approximately 9 MWp of additional solar generation to be delivered by CleanPeak, including a 4.95 MWp system on the existing cargo terminal rooftop as well as a further 4 MWp to be delivered on the 2nd Cargo terminal rooftop;
- a 30 MW / 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), planned for delivery in 2027, to provide stability, resilience and peak demand management; and
- an embedded network enabling the efficient distribution and optimisation of electricity across the airport precinct to both WSI and various tenants within the precinct.
As WSI’s electricity demand grows, CleanPeak will continue to add new build solar farms into its development portfolio across New South Wales, ensuring sufficient renewable generation is available to meet increasing electricity requirements at the site.
The integrated solution has been specifically designed to deliver reliable, clean and green electricity for a major piece of national infrastructure where continuous power supply is essential.
Once the airport is fully operational, expected demand at the site will be over 100 GWh per annum which will be supplied by CleanPeak Energy from 100% renewable sources, both on-site and from our solar farm portfolio, avoiding approximately 64,000 tonnes of CO₂-e / per annum. This is equivalent to removing approximately 22,500 passenger vehicles from Australian roads or powering more than 16,800 average Australian homes for a year.
Unlike conventional energy arrangements, CleanPeak will actively manage and optimise all components of the electrical energy system, including generation, storage and distribution, providing a single integrated solution that balances reliability, cost and sustainability.
WSI CEO Simon Hickey said embedding sustainability into the airport’s design and construction had set it up for success and helped ensure WSI will soon be powered by 100% renewable electricity – when passenger operations start – with the CleanPeak Energy collaboration integral to achieving this.
“We are delighted to be working with Australian-owned business CleanPeak to support WSI’s net zero ambitions,” he said.
“The energy system they will manage represents a landmark commitment to achieving net zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions for WSI, showcasing the low carbon future airports can champion as pivotal pieces of major infrastructure.”
The partnership demonstrates how renewable electricity, battery storage and embedded network infrastructure can be combined to meet the demanding operational requirements of major airports and other large-scale energy users.
CleanPeak has designed its offering at the site to ensure renewable electricity will be available to supply future stages of the airport as and when they are developed as well as tenants and owners in the connected business park within the precinct.
